BEACH MOTOR RACES.
INAUGURATION AT INVERCARGILL, (Peb United Pbesb Association.) INVERCARGILL, May 1. The first beach motor races in Southland were held on the Oreti Beach on Saturday. Splendid weather conditions were experienced, and a crowd of over 3000 was present. It was the unanimous opinion of the visiting drivers that the beach is by far the best and safest in New Zealand. Speeds of over 90 miles au Hour were attained by both cars and cycles. The following are the results:— WAIMAPUKU HANDICAP. Three miles. L. H. Johnston, A.J.S., scr 1 D. Roberta, Harley, 25seo 2 Five started. A number of local riders had difficulty with their machines owing to the lack of beach racing experience. Time, 3min SSsec. INVERCARGILL HANDICAP. Six miles. For cycles up to 400 c.c. L. H. Johnston, A.J.S., scr 1 J. Gorton, A.J.S., 30sec .. 2 Five started. Won easily. Time, 7min 40sec PACIFIC HANDICAP. Twenty-one miles. L. H. Johnston, A.J.S., 20sec 1 H. White, A.J.S., 70scc 2 C. Rhodes, Indian, scr o Four started. Johnston won at 81 miles an hour, and exceeded 91 miles at other stages of the race. Time, 24min 20sec. GLADSTONE HANDICAP. D. Baird, Chrysler, IGOsec 1 J. Bufler, Chrysler, C32sec 2 A. Maider, Chrysler, 36scc 3 Six started. Time, llmin 12sec. SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. R. D. Wraight, Chrysler 1 A. Maider, Chrysler ............ 2 Thre& started. Wraight covered one lap (three miles) in 2rain 25 l oscc.
