LADIES’ OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. A DAY OF SURPRISES. There was an improvement in the conditions at Balniaoewen yesterday, where the hist and second rounds ot match play in connection witn the Ladies’ Open Championship of Otago were played. The fairways were on tho heavy side, but the greens were good. Conditions impioved as the day wore on, the sun appearing to brighten up matters considerably. Some of the games in tho morning were very closely contested, three pairs finishing two up and one to play. Tho surprise of tho morning was tho eliminating ot Mrs Dodgshun by her club mate, Miss M. Stevens. The latter played steady golf, her putting and tee strokes being features of her game. She wont out in 40, several of the holes being done under bogey. Tho conditions did not suit Mrs Dodgshun’s play, who was off her mashic, her approaches being her chief weakness. Tho defeat of the champion so soon in the competition puts a totally different complexion on the possibilities of this year’s winner. If Miss O. Kay maintains the form she displayed both at Christchurch and in her qualifying rounds she will have very little difficulty in annexing the title. Of the players who qualified five had easy games in the morning. Miss Kay went out in 40, and finished 9 up and 8 to play against Miss Gallaway. Miss Glondining beat Mrs Lemon by a margin of 5 up and 4. Miss Gould bad an easy win from Mrs Gaffin, whom she defeated bv 9 and 7. Mrs Kerr disposed of Mrs Bell by finishing 6 mid 5, and Mrs Cook won from Mrs Callender by 4 and 3. The game between Mrs M’Carthy and Mrs Orboll was a good one tho former registering a two-and-one victory over the North Otago representative. They turned ail square, and fought tho second half, each in turn winning a hole. The Otago lady, however, won tho 15lh, 16th, and 17th holes, which gave her the deciding hole. Miss White-Parsons, of Christchurch, had a close game with MLs 0. Srevr-ns (Otago). Tho Christchurch lady played very steady golf, and the result was in accordance with the standard of play. Tho result* of the morning round are:— ' Miss O. Kay beat Miss Gallaway 9 up and 8. Miss White-Parsons beat Miss O. Stevens 2 and 1. Miss Gould beat Mrs 'Caffin 9 and 7. The Mount was won by Miss Glcndining in bogey 3, and by winning the long hole and the next two she was four up. Miss Stevens played Roy’s well and reduced the score to three up, with a bogey 3. The tussle ended on tho Spion Kop green, where Miss Glcndinitig holed her fifth stroke and finished 4 up and 3. The match between Mrs J. A. Cook and tho present holder of tho Now Zealand open championship—Mrs Kerr,of Tiniaru — was brimful of good golf. Mrs Cook went out well and was two up at tho turn, faking 41 to Mrs Kerr’s 45. The first hole was halved in bogey five. Mrs Cook won the second in 5 to 6. Tho next two holes wore halved in five and throe respectively. Mrs Cook was down in five (bogey) to Mrs Korr’g six, making her two up at Terraco. Mrs Kerr won the Ridge in four and then, at Camel’s Back, Mrs Cook was down' in four to six. The long hole was halved in one over bogey. Mrs Kerr annexed M’Glashan’s with a four to five. The thirteenth was halved in six. Roy’s was a bad hole for both players and foil to Mrs Cook in five ; Mrj Kerr gained the honour again at Spion Kop, where she was out in five to her opponent’s six. By halving the next two holes in six and five respectively, Mrs Cook won the match two up and one. Mrs M’C’arthy had no difficulty in defeating Miss Gould. She finished the game on tho twelfth green, leaving her 7 up and 6. Mr* MUarthy wont out in 45, and was four up at tho turn. The next three holes were won in par golf. Tho result of tho match between Miss 0. Kay and Miss White-Parsons (Christchurch) was never in doubt. The St. Clair lady led from tho start, winning three and halving ono out of tho first four holes.
