PRISONER’S ESCAPE.
A DASH FOR LIBERTY. STILL AT LARGE. * (Special to Dails Times.) AUCKLAND, December 6. A" daring escape from Mount Eden prison was made last night by Samuel Arthur Pudney, aged 35, an habitual criminal, who was serving a sentence of two years for false pretences imposed by the Supreme Court at Auckland in January last. About 7.30 last evening Pudney made an excuse to go to the prison quarry. He waited for a favourable opportunity, and while unobserved by the warders for a moment he made a quick dash through an open gate which he slammed in the face of the pursuing warders. Having thus gained a slight advantage, Pudney stepped fast along the Boston road to Khyber Pass and was lost in the darkness. Immediately search parties, comprising constables, detectives, and warders, set out after the prisoner, special care being taken to watch the domain and its entrances, where it was thought he might take shelter. The search party was augmented to-day, but so far without success.
