PRINCE RANJITSINHJI
A CHARGE OF SPEEDING. LONDON, November 18. The Brentford magistrates to-day resumed the hearing of a charge against Prince Ranjitsinhji of driving a motor car at an excessive speed. To-day’s hearing -was largely devoted to argument ■whether Ranjitsinhji was a foreigner. Counsel contended that as the King could do no wrong, neither could a prince reigning under him. The chairman demanded proof that Ranjitsinhji was a reigning sovereign. Counsel nest claimed diplomatic privilege under an ancient statute. The Chairman said the statute applied to foreign princes. Counsel: Yes. The Chairman : But Ranjitsinhji is an Indian, and not a foreigner. Counsel: He is a foreigner in the sense that he is not English. Another magistrate remarked: Oar King is King of India. Ranjitsinhji is only a suzerain. Counsel cited a case in which a court of appeal established Ranjitsinhji’s privi'rhe Chairman retorted that that was a civil case, while this was a criminal case. A further adjournment was made to enable counsel to produce authorities, also to give proof that Ranjitsinhji reigns.
