OTAGO SOUTHLAND. At Culling Park on Saturday the Southland ladies’ hockey team which has just returned from a successful tour met a representative Otago team. The game was very ragged and uninteresting, the wet ground making bright play almost impossible. Tho match was commenced in a slight drizzle, but in the later stages rain fell more heavily, making the conditions much worse. The Southlanders dominated tho game from tho bully, and carried play into tho home team’s ’territory. A good save by the Otago custodian eased a critical situation, but Miss Burt, the Southland fullback returned tho ball with good clean hitting time and again. On the wing Miss Gardiner for Southland was opening up tho play well, but tho sticky ground prevented good passing. After a long period of defensive play, Miss Hanlon for Otago got away with almost a clear field in front of her, and play for a while hovered about midfield, Otago eventually making a determined attack on the Southland goal. One of a melee in the circle, the ball just missed the net by inches. A corner was conceded, but tlie visitors took possession and once more returned to the attack. Several shots at goal were unsuccessful, but the defenders could not throw off the attack. The halftime whistle sounded with no score on either side. . When play was resumed, the ram had set in steadilv and good play was rendered more than ever difficult. Otago started a concerted movement down the field and within a few minutes Miss Hanlon centred smartly to Mrs Purvis, whoso shot went high, beyond reach of the goalie’s upstretchsd hand, but beneath the bar. Otago 1, Southland nil. The visitors again took the offensive and -carried tho game to Otago’s circle, whore it remained practically the whole lime. Good passing was impossible, and tho many shots taken were the result of good fortune more than good play. Several times in succession Miss Guest shot, but always the ball wont a little wide. With seven minutes to go Southland was still hammering at tho Otago goal, when Miss Garden, with a hard shot to centre, gave Miss Guest an opening, which resulted in lhat player scoring. The game ended a few minutes later with the scores equal. Otago ... Southland „ ~ 1 goal
