Mr M. Barnett was n passenger to Christchurch by the through express on Saturday. Mr Herbert Coull loft Dunedin by the north express ‘on Saturday en route for Wellington. Mr G. W. manager of the Para Rubber Company, was a passenger for Christchurch by the express on Satuidav. Mr J. W. Hardley (vice-president of the New Zealand Bowling Council) left Dunedin by the north express on Saturday on his way back to Auckland. Mr H. J. Farrant (chairman of the Southland Court at the Exhibition) and Mr J. K. Winsloe (secretary) arrived in Dunedin by the through express on Saturday morning. Mr H. J. Farrant (chairman of the New Zealand Baptist Union), who has been addressing meetings in Otago and Southland during tlie last week in advocacy of the abolition of the liquor traffic, passed through Dunedin on Saturday morning on his way back to Wellington. , A Reuter cablegram from Ottawa states that Mr Croft, assistant trade commissioner in Auckland, and has been promoted to the rank of commissioner, grade one. Mr Montgomery Stuart, one of the judges at the forthcoming Competitions Festival, arrived in Dunedin on Saturday night. Mr W. Gardiner, of Papakaio, returned north bv the express on Saturday. Dr Williams and Dr CWmalt Jones have returned to Dunedin after spending a week Mr Charles Robertson, of the local Post Office, lias been appointed assistant supervisor of the Post Office Savings Bank, Christchurch. At the request of a number of members of the school committees of North Otago. Mr James Mitchell, who previously for 19 years was a member of the Otago Eclucaition Board, has consented to be nominated for the vacant seat on the Northern Ward of the board. Mr John Little, of Omihi, celebrated his 89th birthday last week. Mr Little arrived in New Zealand by the’ Strathfieldsaye. which reached Port Chalmers in May, 1808. He is still able to get about (says the North Otago Times), and takes a keen interest in ail that is doing on his farm. Mr D. C. Cameron, who entered the employment of Messrs Reid and Gray (Ltd.) some 35 years ago as office boy. has been* appointed a director of the company. A Press Association message from Hastings states that at a meeting of Hawke’s Bay Maoris, Hone Moketa was accepted as the Labour candidate for the Eastern Maori electorate. Major W. Fleming, who has had a long association with the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and who latterly held the position of assistant commissioner of the Otago district, has tendered his resignation. Colonel; W. J. Strong has been appointed to the vacant position. Mr R. D. Kelly, chief inspector of the Post and Telegraph Department, who has completed over 42 years of service with the department, will retire on superannuation at the end of this month. Mr Kelly was appointed to the Post Office staff at Napier in 1883, and was employed there and at Auckland for the following 20 years At the function in connection with the celebration of Association Day at the Commercial Travellers’ Club on Saturday night, Mr James Brown, the newly-appointed president of the United Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association of New Zealand, was presented with his badge of office. Mr F. W. Mitchell, in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to the great work the recipient had done on behalf of the association during the past 40 years. Mr Brown suitably replied. Services at the ’ "nited Congregational Church yesterday inaugurated the pastorate of the Rev. C. Maitland Elliss, late of Brisbane. The now pastor preached both morning and evening, the congregation at the latter service being specially large. Mr Elliss, who is a comparatively young man, impressed his hearers as a preacher of considerable power, essentially strongly opposed to sensationalism in’the pulpit. The soloists in the evening anthem were Miss Alice Wilkinson and Mr G. Dyer. A public welcome will be extended to Mr Elliss at the church to-morrow night.
