MONEY IN CARS.

BOOM IN AUCKLAND. FIRMS EXTENDING OPERATIONS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, September 13. So iong as New Zealand adds to her stock of motor cars at the rate of about 60 a day the motor trade mhst lie perfectly justified in its claim to be the most active industry we have (says the Star). It has entered upon a period of great prosperity. and the building schemes of a number of leading city firms are planned on a scale that is unparalleled by any other industry in the country. One firm that had notices “To Let” placarded up on one floor of its premises not long ago has now planned a new block with 8000 square feet of floor space to add to its present, capacity of 16.000 square feet. Another enterprising business recently expanded to 25.500 square feet of floor space on a site just a couple of hundred yards away fropi the spot where 12 years ago a small shed 20 by 20 feet marked the beginning of the busine.ss. This achievement is rivalled by a firm of five years' existence, which, however, had a more pretentious beginning, and claims to be the only motor business in the Dominion founded by a woman. With the present premises of just on 36,000 square feet this firm has maintained its vigorous growth of the boom years, and now plans to erect a seven-storey building. Another firm proposes to expand its promises from less than 30,000 to almost 60,000 square foot, hut one of the principal building projects just now is that of a company with a site in Upper Symonds street where it intends to establish one of the largest retail dealer premises and service stations in New Zealand. No less significant is the scheme of a southern wholesale firm to erect a threestorev building on a site 130 ft by 170 ft. Optimism runs fast, and the. plans have been prepared for an eight-storey block to handle the distribution of three or four different makes of motor vehicles in the north.
