ROADS AND RAILWAYS. STATEMENT BY MR COATES. NFAV RAILWAY DAIRY' TARIFF. (Pksi United Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, Juno 11. Speaking in reply to the toast of Jhis health at a ceremony ye.Jcnlay, the 1 nine Minister said that when 95 per cent, ot the payable exports came from tho soil tney must give tho producers reasonable hope and encouragement, but conditions in a few year’s would be belter than those which existed to-day. In. many parts of New Zealand local rating was becoming » mirdw on many settlers, and it might bo difficult to keep them on • tho land unless some moans wore found of getting them relief. One means of affording relief was by docent road facilities to the main lines of railway. He was anxious that, no matter where a sctller lived, lie should .have his goods and merchandise handled by , tho Railway Department, working in co-opera-tion with motor transport. It was not proposed to enter into competition with the motor people* in country contiguous to-the railway, but he -wanted to link up tho motor system with the Railway Department, so that it would carry out the whole function of transportation from the railways to the settlers. Regarding railway dairy tariff, ho said that the new tariff proposals adopted b" tho Railway Department would bo issued in tho course of a few days, and circulated among chambers of commerce, dairy companies, and farmers’ unions for consideration. When answers were received the proposals would come before Cabinet and himself for final adoption.
