FALLEN SOLDIERS MEMORIAL.

UK VEILED BT GOVERNORGENERAL. AN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY. A memorial was unveiled at Glenorchy on Eriday by the Governor-General (Viscount Jcllkoe) in memory o£ the soldiers from the surrounding districts who fell in the Great War (reports our Queenstown correspondent). There was a largo attendance, including many residents of Queenstown and the surrounding country, and the ceremony was a most impressive one. On the arrival of the s.s. Earnslaw at Glenorchy the school children sang the National Anthem, and the Vice-regal party were afterwards escorted up to the Earnslaw Hotel, -where they were entertained at luncheon by the members of the I 1 alien Soldiers’ Committee. The unveiling and dedication of the memorial took place at 2 p.m., when a large crowd assembled in the vicinity of the Post Office, where the monument stands in full view of the passers-by. Seated on the platform with his jvxcellency were Lieu-tenant-commander Dove, A.D.C., Captain Curtis (private secretary), and Captain P. Mackenzie —all of whom were in uniform Mr James Horn. M.P., the Revs. H. Shulto Bishop (chaplain), and J. H. Robertson. . In addition to the address given by 1m Excellency, speeches were also made by Mr Horn and , tho Rev. Mr Bishop. The latter also assisted tho Rev. Mr Robertson in the dedication of the memorial, The proceedings opened and closed with the National Anthem, and tho assemblage also joined in tho hymn “O God Our Help. ’ Bugler A. Mayno (Queenstown) sounded the “Last Post.” When his Excellency had accomplished tho unveiling ho laid a beautiful wreath at the foot of the monument, and similar tributes were placed on it by the Queenstown Patriotic and Red Cross Societies, the Glenorchy and Rees Valley Schools, and by relatives and friends of the fallen soldiers. Mr George Reid, chairman of the Memorial Committee, directed the day’s ceremonies. Tho memorial, which stands 15ft 6in high, and is 9ft square at the base, takes tho form of a monument in Carrara marble, the figure of a New Zealand soldier surmounting a marble, base, which in turn stands on three concrete tiers.
