Entre Nous. NOTES ON THE RACING. (Frou Odb Special Reporter.) WELLINGTON, March 29. The morning was dull and threatening for the second day of the Wellington meeting, but the rain held off until well on in the afternoon, when a steady drizzle set in, which soon made the track soft. The Curragh was made a good favourite for the Second High-weight Handicap. Hebegan much more smartly than on the first day and was always well placed, but Otaura Kid carried too many guns for him, and sailing along in the lead, won very comfortably, the favourite just beating Starland for second money, with Anxious Moments and Vagabond at the brown gelding's quarters. the Hutt Handicap was a good race. Top Score set out to win all the way and she entered the straight with such a, nice lead that she looked a winner, but she tired over the last 100 yards and was headed by Ares and Printemps in the very last stride. There were noses between the three. Refrigeration was a. fair fourth, but Good Sport failed to show the form he is credited with, and has perhaps gone off. Ghandhu was sent out a solid favourite for the Muritai Handicap. He was always well placed and took charge after entering the straight, running home an easy winner, well clear of Oarpentier, who ran his beat race to date. The Autumn Handicap was a good race. Landslide, nicely handled by W. S. Bagby, made the" pace a cracker, and looked likely to win easily, but Gold Light put in a great run in the straight and just failed to eaten the Nassau gelding by inches. Sunart and Stork ran fairly well, but Mantua and Silver Peak both went very scratchily in their preliminaries and never flattered their backers, and Bonnie Winkie did not show anything like his best form. There was a boil-over in the Pacific Handicap, for the P/unedin-owned Fulmar ran out the sis furlongs in great style, and beat the favourite, Tuahine, very comfortably and returned his supporters a big dividend. Lady Bentinck, who is a very nice filly, struggled on well with her big weight, but f-cund the task of catching the light-weights just too much for her. Ronex, who has not filled out much since the spring, did not run a good race. The traek was getting heavy when Muraahi, Rapine, and Ballymena paraded for the TRENTHAM GOLD CUP. Pilliewinkie was withdrawn on account of the softness of the track, he being unable to handle himself in heavy ground. The three runners looked well, aid Rapine was sent out favourite in a good betting race. When the tapes were released Ballymena Bet out to force the pace, with the others trailing; along behind him. About five furlongs from home Rapine and Muraahi made a forward move, but their efforts were useless, for aa soon as MFCaTten oalled on the eon. of 1 J

Nassau and Medley he made short work of his opponents, and was galloping away from them over the last quarter of a mile, and there is no doubt that he is a much better gelding than he has been credited with toeing. Also he is a rare stayer. There was a heavy shower when the Suburban Handicap was run, and it was impossible to distinguish the placing of the horses until they were well int:* the straight. Then it could be seen that Santonio was in the lead, with Laat Crust. Razzia Dazzle, and Hipo chasing him home, but they could not Vcatch him. Listening Post ran badly, and finished at the tail end of the field, while Sunny Loch, Mircusonta, Murihaupa, and Martian Miss were never dangerous. The Belmont Handicap was a, repetition of the Suburban Handicap, for it was impossible to see the horses until they got into tlie straight, when Kenmore had a nice lead of the lot, and he ran home- a very comfortable winner, and, although lie was favourite, he returned his supporters a very nice price. Goldtown, who finished second looked to be beaten a furlong from homo, 'but he came on again, and was travelling well when tae poet was reached. The Cheat was also running on at the finish. NEW BRIGHTON TROTS (Pe» United P-buss Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 29 The New Brighton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting concluded to-day in dull weather. A shower fell after the second race, but the weather cleared again. The going was hard. Tahuna Park was the scene of friendly rivalry on Saturday afternoon, when the Dunedin Gun Club and the members of the Kiwi itifle Club held a shooting' match. The meeting was in honour of the ladies, who were represented by selected marksmen. The day was not altogether suitable for shooting owing to the heavy wind blowing, but some good marksmanship was witnessed, in spite of the adverse conditions. Shooting with a breechloader is very different to rifle shooting, and consequently the members of the Rifle Club did not meet their opponents on an equal footing. The match was a seven clay bird handicap, and for the Rifle Club 19 members took part, and Messrs Wipna.ll, Parker, and Pettit scoring four each shot off for places, which result«i in Mr Wignall being placed first. Mr Parker second, and Mr Pettit third. Mesdames Fennesy, Jones, and Johnstone, who drew the names of these shooters, were handed the trophies. The Gun Club waa represented by 14 shooters, and the president (Mr G. K. Turner), shooting with bis usual consistency off 31 yards, scored the possible with seven

first barrels, thus winning the match. Messrs P. E. Wood (10 yards), H. H. Henderson (18 yards), and R. M’Dcmald (10 yards), with sis each to their credit, shot off for second and third prizes, and Mr Wood proved the winner of the second prize, and Mr M’Donald the third. Mesdames M’lntosh and Morrison and Miss Parker drew the names of the placed shooters, and they were handed the trophies. The respective presidents of the clubs made a few happy comments.
