BUBONIC PLAGUE
OUTBREAK IN SOUTH AFRICA. THE COUNTRY ALARMED. Pt«m Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CAPETOWN, February 20. (Received Feb. 21, at 7.30 p.m.) An outbreak of bubonic plague in the north of the Free State is assuming serious dimensions. The Government haa drafted police to Kroonstadt to control the movements of the natives, who are being refused travelling passes except in cases of urgency. The plague is being carried in a southerly direction by veldt rodents. The country is alarmed at the daily report of fresh cases. The Government is hesitating to proclaim the outbreak a formidable epidemic, fearing the closing of foreign ports against South African produce.—Sydney Sun Cable.
