AN INVALID MARRIAGE
PERFORMED BY UNAUTHORISED PRIEST. CURIOUS CASE IN LONDON. Pxwa Association —By Telegraph—Copyrigct LONDON, October 20. During the heaving of the petition of Cicely Pervical for the restitution of conjugal rights it was stated in evidence that the marriage had been solemnised by a Roman Catholic priest who was not authorised to do so. The suit was dismissed, and the marriage was declared to be invalid. Father Grogan, in evidence, said that though he was not authorised he agreed to marry the parties, who were members of a touring theatrical company, “to save shipwrecking the petitioner s morals and faith.” He told the parties that they must be civilly married before a registrar at the earliest possible moment. The judge, who warned the priest before he gave evidence, pointed out that an unauthorised person who performed a marriage ceremony committed a felony.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
