EXPORT OF EGGS.

LARGE CONSIGNMENT FROM OTAGO.

The, Otago Egg Circle is at present receiving supplies of eggs for export to the London market. The circles in the four centres are combining to send a consignment, and a very large quantity will be exported. The quota from the Otago Circle will be 500 cases, 30 dozen in a case, or 180,000 eggs in all. A similar quota will be sent from each of the centres in Christchurch, Wellington, or Auckland. The total consignment will total 720,000 eggs. The shipment will bo made under the auspices of the New Zealand Poultry Association, which is promoting the export movement.

The Dunedin consignment is being cased at the South Island Dairy Company’s cool stores under the supervision of Mr Cousins, of the Agricultural Department, who will also supervise'the shipments of the other circles. The eggs before being placed in layers in the cardboarded honeycomb sections are carefully examined, and any that have air cells, shrunken yokes, or blood spots are placed on one side. The eggs sent in to the Otago Egg Circle are of very fine quality, and very few are not up to the specified 2oz weight. It, is hoped that an export trade will ultimately bo,set up, and that the local markets will as a consequence be stabilised, 'At the present time the fluctuations of prices are so marked that it is thought many poultry keepers may be driven out of the business, and what may turn out to be a valuable industry may thus be restricted. Mr Morrett, secretary of the New Zealand Poultry Association, is going Home, and ho will watch the marketing of these eggs in London. The consignments are expected to reach London at the beginning of ..overaber (corresponding to May in New Zealand), when Home prices are firm. The eggs will be placed on the Corinthic. They will be carried in cool chambers.
