OBITUARY.

One of Taieri’s earliest settlers passed away on Thursday morning in the person of Mr William Lindsay, who, up till two years ago, carried on farming operations on the Taieri. He was born of Scottish parents in the North of Ireland in 1848. At the age of 19 years he emigrated to New Zealand in the ship Warrior Queen, landinrr in Dunedin, after an eventful voyage, on January 29, 1868. He was in the position of many another young immigrant, in that he had only a few pounds in his possession. He made his way to the Taieri Plain, and obtained a position as a ploughman with the late Mr William Stephenson at Riverside, near Outram, and afterwards with the late Mr James Allan, of Hopehill, Allanton. He married in 1875. Later he began farming on his own account at Keith Hall, East Taieri, and subsequently purchased farming properties at North Taieri, Riverside, Allanton, and Momona, Included in these were" two on which ho worked as a ploughman on bis arrival from the Old Country. Ho held all these lands, approximating 1009 acres, until old age compelled him to retire and leave his sons to carry on the farms. Mr Lindsay was a particularly keen nidge of cattle, and for 50 years consigned prime fat cattle to the Burnside fPdeyards every week. rte was a regular visitor to cattle sales at Balclutha and elsewhere. and wss well known to those connected with the jive stock business. He was never a, public man, but was a keen of the Allanton and East Taieri Presbyterian Churches, in which he wag an elder. He, wjth a few other formers, was the first to start the Otago Farmers’ Cooperative Association of which he was a director and shareholder for many years. Me was an''energetic and highly successful farmer, of kindly and generous disposition, end wo* recognised by those who had dealings vitb him as an absolutely honest and straight man. He is survived by a widow and six of a fnnv’y.
