Mr A. A. Paape returned from the north by the express yesterday. Mr J. A. Macpherson, M.P. for Oamaru, returned north by the express yesterday. Miss Lily Butler has advised the IJunodin Returned Soldiers' Association that she will arrive in Dunedin to-day or tomorrow. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P. for Hurunui, arrived in Palmorston by the express yesterday. Mr R. H. Simons, railway station master at Dunodin, has returned from the north and resumed his duties. ( Mr W. A. Flavell, general manager of the Westport Coal Company, left by the express yesterday for Wellington. A Press Association message from Auckland announces the death of Mr George Court, of the firm of George Cpurt (Ltd.), drapers; aged 71. Mr A. C Laing (secretary of the local Returned Soldiers' Association) will leave for the north this morning to attend the annual conference of the N.Z.R.S.A. in Auckland. Cr J. B. Shaddock, accompanied by his wife and daughter, were passengers by the north express yesterday, en route for England. Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P., Leader of the Liberal Party, and Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., left by the afternoon train yesterday for Palmerston. Mr R. Masters, M.P. for Stratford, and Mr E. A. Ransom, M.P. for Pahiatua, were passengers for the North Island by yesterday's express. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart will leave Wellington this evening to attend the Dunedin Show. On Sunday afternoon he hopes to attend the memorial service to South African veterans, and on Monday evening the veterans' reunion. The death _is announced (says a Press Association wire from Palmerston North) of Mr H. Earl Lauronson, late assistant manager of the Paramount Service. He went away with the Fifth .rteinforcements, and was a well-known entertainer at the front. He was wounded at Suvla Bay. He died at Waipukurau Sanatorium. A London Press Association cable message reports that H.R.H. Princess Helena Victoria, sister of the late King Edward VII, and widow of Prince Christian of Sahleswig-Holstein, is seriously ill from a fieart attack following on influenza. At the meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society last night a resolution was carried expressing the council's appreciation of the work of Mr W. J. Robinson, more particularly as a member.of the Angling Committee. Mr Robinson, who is leaving shortl" for Christchurch, briefly expressed his thanks At Wednesday night's practice of the Dunedin Male Choir, Mr W. Ibbotson (vicepresident), on behalf of the choir, presented Mr Alf. Ibbotson with a gold bar voted by the members for 20'years' good service. Messrs R. James and J. D. M'Kechnie contributed songs during the evening, and a first tenor, having passed the Test Committee, was admitted. Mr J. Matier, who, along with Mr W. Bannerman, is retiring on pension after many years loyal service in the Bank of New Zealand, was met. by the staff yesterday, and the manager, on their behalf, presented him with an armchair and pities, at the same time extending to him ihe best wishes of all for a happy'time in retirement. Mr Matier made a feeling reply. Mr Gerald Maskell, who has been appointed assistant to Professor H. B. Kirk, professor of biology at Victoria College. Wellington, entered as a medical student at the Auckland University College five years ago. He subsequently decided to relinquish medicine for pure science, and specialised in biology, with Particular attention to zoology. He has "taken the B.A. and B.Sc. degrees, and when appointed was cToing research work on the structure and life history of the weta. so common on the Waitakere Ranges. He has had an excellent education in languages and in physical science, as well as in biological science.
