SIXTY YEARS AGO

PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTION. PORT CHALMERS.—DECLARATION OF THE POLL. The result of the polling at Port Chalmers was declared by the Returning Officer at four p.m. on Saturday. The number ot votes recorded was —tor Mr Macandrew, 21 ; for Mr Taylor. 11; and Mr Macandrew was accordingly declared duly elected —an intimation which was received with cheers trom the ten or dozen persons wh*> had assembled at the polling place. . . A meeting, which was announced to be “of the working men who are determined to maintain intact the eight-hour system that has prevailed in Otago for the last 16 years” was held at noon on Saturday in the centre of the Octagon. There was at no time during the proceedings 103 persons present; and the majority wore apparently passers-by who were attracted to tno spot. Mr J. G. S. Grant addressed the assemblage for nearly half-an-hour in condemnation 01 those who had taken employment under Messrs Pearce and Paokham on condition of working nine hours a-day,, and in favour of the lormation of a society for upnolding the cigftthours system which ■he declared to be the birthright of Otago. He was in favour of eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and improvement, and eight tor sleep. . .
