AGITATION IN JOHANNESBURG. APPEAL FOR CLEMENCY. Press Association—By Telegraph— Copyright CAPETOWN, December 11. The agitation in Johannesburg against tlr© death sentences is growing. A meeting of the Associated Trade Unions decided to call a meeting of the union executives, members of the Assembly, ministers of religion, and other public men with a view to considering what steps should bo taken to influence the policy of the Government in the direction of initiating the prosecutions on something less than the capital charge, and in the cases of convictions for the capital offence the more frequent exercise of the prerogative cf mercy. A resolution was passed that the sentences for the alleged crimes during the strike were not iustifiable, but were reprisals, and calling on the lovers ‘of justice the world over to exercise all possible pressure to stop the policy cf reprisals. All trade unions were urged to agree to a one-day strike on a given date. A meeting at Benoni passed a resolution to cable the British Prime Minister requesting him, to intercede for the condemned men ; also to send a deputation to the Prime Minister and the GovernorGeneral.—A. and N.Z.
