“MOONSHINERS."
BATTLE IN KENTUCKY. PROHIBITION OFFICERS DEFEATED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, December 11. (Received Dec. 12, at 11.5 n.m.) A message from Lexington (Kentucky) states that for three days Federal prohibition officers numbering 100 battled with a force of illicit liquor distillers, who steadily retreated into an inaccessible mountain fastness, and are now entrenched in caves. Two officers were killed and many wounded. The posee finally gave up the attempt to apprehend tho offenders, and to beat a retreat, hut suffered casualties from snipers, who used long-ranged rifles. Governor Aforrow has offered 500 dollars reward for the apprehension of the leaders of the band. Kentucky has always been noted for its “moonshiners,” who, for half a century, have succeeded in evading the revenue officers, often killing those who ventured into their reserves.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
