SUPREME COURT

SITTING IN HOKITIKA. GRAND JURY’S RECOMMENDATION. (Fu United Press AssociA’noN.) HOKITIKA, June 24. At the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Adams, the Grand Jury found no bill in the only criminal charge of alleged receiving stolen goods. It also recommended that, in view of increased education and the wide publication of the newspapers, that Grand Juries should bo abolished, except in capital charges. In an appeal from the Warden’s decision against the cancelling of timber areas of the Hokitika Gorge, counsel for appellant raised the question of the legality of the appointment of respondent as acting mining registrar at Hokitika. The point was upheld that no mining registrar had been appointed ; therefore no acting-registrar had power to sue. The appeal was therefore upheld. The suit of the Pine Mills. Ltd., versus Orr Bros, for a claim of £l2O was heard. As far as the plaintiff’s case was concerned, counsel for defendant raised several nonsuit points as to the pleadings. Plaintiff then asked leave to amend the pleadings and leave it to defendant to answer questions either of the contract or the torts involved. His Honor agreed with the contention, but intimated that the defence would be entitled to an adjournment. This was asked for. and the case was adjourned to the September sittings of the court, costs amounting to' £9 5s being allowed the defendant.
