PROHIBITION CAMPAIGN

The Anglian General Synod heard a deputation from the New Zealand Alliance asking for co-operation in its prohibition campaign. The Rev. John Dawson said that the liquor problem was the church’s problem, and the world expected the church to solve it. Her failure would disappoint both friends and enemies, and if the church failed to bring forth the best results she was in danger of forfeiting leadership in moral reforms. The Primate (Bishop Julius) said that, as far as he knew, the General Synod hn<i never passed any direct resolution on the subject of prohibition. Diocesan Synods hud expressed an objection more than once to making any decision on a question which thev regarded _as political. “I can assure you," he said, “that thirty years ago there were few clergy and fewer laity who could ha,ve listened so patiently to what you* have said; but the very vast majority at this moment, if not in favour of prohibition, are in favour of a great change.” He was aware that the prohibition law could and would be defeated in certain quarters, but the important thing to note was that the number of sober and decent-living men would be vastly increased, ye expressed himself as being personally in favour of prohibition in New Zealand, where the geographical conditions were more' favourable than in some other countries.
