TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was presided over by Cr Walter Biocide (chairman). The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the post four weeks had amounted to £2023 8s 4d, and the bank book showed a credit balance of £396 12s 3d. — Adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported having inspected all the slaughter-houses in the county and found everything cl«n in and around them. The piggery at'Green Island was in a clean condition. He had granted a permit for the removal of a house situated in Gladstone road (North Taieri Hiding), fbr re-erection in Riccarton, Hast Taieri (Otokia Riding) on condition that all borer-infected and unsound timber be taken cut. —Received; action approved. The Ranger reported having impounded 23 head of cattle and 181 sheep.—Received. In connection with section 45 of "The Finance Act, 1920,” the Napier Borough Council, considering that the action of the banks m New Zealand nullified this section, asked support to the following motion: —"That the Government be asked to introduce legislation, providing that credit balances of local authorities on loan accounts ehall be set otf by the banks against debit balances on other accounts, as regards payment of interest on the latter accounts.” —It was resolved to support the motion. A. F. Knowles, Brighton, requested that the footpath on Bedford parade lie cleaned up. He would pay for the material used from tho road to his place.—To be attended to on conditions stated. Alexander Steven, Otokia. drew attention to the condition of the fence between the service bridge and the railway fence at Otokia. —To be attended to. The Town Clerk, Outram, drew attention to the slate of the water channels along the main street ; the grass and weeds required editing badly.—To be attended tb. The Middlemarch branch of the Farmers’ Union forwarded copy of the following motion ; —“ln the opinion of this branch of the Farmers’ Union the council should continue the supply of bird poison, and that the grain should be crushed, so as to abate the havoc caused by the small birds.”—Clerk to point out the excessive cost of poison at present; but as there were indications of a fall, something would likely be done in the near future. Cr Matheson moved the following motion, notice of which he had given at last meeting: “Resolved that resolution passed that the council by-law licensing pedlars <md hawkers be not enforced, be and is hereby rescinded.”—Carried. Thomas Carruthers, Middlemarch, stated his intention of erecting a fence to diefino the roadline between ■'< 4 and 5, block IX, Strath-Taieri dislr.ct, and asked the council to give permission to make this roadline half a chain wide. He enclosed the signatures of the holders of tho adjoining runs, who were the only users of this road. These people were agreeablq to the proposed width. —The council regretted that it had no statutory powers to grant the request. D. C. Kidd, Middlemarch, wrote regarding the formation of the road leading to his property. At present his only access was through a neighbour’s property.—Matter to receive attention. J. Miller, Fairfield, asked permission to remove a few loads of clay from the bank in front of his house to allow a cart to enter. —Referred to the engineer. F. Millier, Brighton, wrote with reference to the state of the water-table in front of his property in Brighton.—Referred to engineer. T. H. Pugh, Duke’s road,. Mosgiel, suggested that either a permanent fence or a gate bo placed at the entrance into the Silverstream on the Riccartoh road to prevent cattle from going into the stream. He also asked that a few loads of gravel be placed on the road leading into the stream. — Granted. It was resolved that the accident insurance on the council’s .employees bo divided between the Government and tho Commercial office.
