BOWLING.
DOMINION TOURNAMENT. FIFTH DAY. BINKS COMMENCE IN BEAUTIFUL . 1 WEATHER. The heavy rain that fell all Sunday ’ “ slackened in the evening, and Monday morning broke fair but dull Long before noon, nowever, the clouds dispersed and bright warm sunshine gladdened the hearts of the large army of bowlers at present in tile city. It had been intended in view of tho heavy rain to commence play at 2.16 p.m. and to have only one round. A way of getting in two rounds and so making up the lost time presented itself, however, and was • quickly adopted. Instead of having one round of 25 heads it was decided to begin , at 2 o’clock, reduce the tea interval to the barest possible minimum, and have two ; rounds of 21 heads, with a two and threequarter hour-limit. After the full of more than an inch and a-half of ruin it was inevitable that the greens should be heavy but they were- not nearly as blow us was anticipated and they rapidly improved as tho day wore on. At the Dunedin Green, which is the headquarters of tlie''tournament, there was a largo gathering at 2 o’clock, and, the Mayor, Mr J. £f. Douglas, extended a Very cordial welcome to the visiting bowlers and expressed tho hope that their visit might be a thoroughly enjoyable one. Fifty was continued steadily throughout the (afternoon** under ideal conditions and S-7.30 p.m. two rounds had beon comstod on almost all the greens. Tho total nuihbor of ’ rinks competing is 110. consisting of 440 players. Ten , rinks are playing on each of the 11 greens in use. There is but one section on each rink and in order to make conditions as fair as possible’ to alj the sections move to different greens pn each of the four clays of play. ’ The following gentlemen officiated as um--piles (at the various greens:—Captain Sundstrura _ (Otago), Messrs O. J. Stubley ... (Moyhington), R. W. Glendining (Kaituna), 5 F. J. Chisholm (North-East Valley),’ P. Miller (Dunedin-), •A. M'Dmigall (Roslyn), iW. Rolfo (Balmacewen), H. Smeaton (Caversham),. J. EL, Hancock (St. Clair), F. J. Lough (Kaikorai), W. T. Henaghan (Gale- . - domain). ■ . . On* the North-East Valley Green thate .were? two ties, in the first round which had to be decided by tile playing of > extra heads. The game between Richards (Alexandra) and Hunter (Opavfa) was one of „ those) They were four all at the sixth head; but at the 12th Richards led 10 —5; ' At - the 16th they were 11 all and at the 19th Elunter led 15—13. Richards got'a single at each • of the next three heads, % however, thus winning 16 —15 on the 22nd. The other tie was between Ure (of Mount Eden) and Frobarth (of Gore). Ure led at the 11th end, but at tho 19th Frobkrth bad 21 to his 17. At the next ’ head.' however, Ure put on six, making him 23 to Frobarth’a 21. Frobarth responded with 'a two, thus drawing level at the 21st. Ure 'lay three at the close of the extra head land won a dose and interesting contest by 26 lo 23. A) certain amount of luck /'must always be associated with the giamd of bowls. Stuart (St. Kilda) experienced a good deal of it in big game >vith Thorn (Mataura), in the second round, (but. it aJJ went the wrong way for him,\ A y striking mstance of tnis occurred towards the, close of the game. It was level pegging between the two rinks until about the flevenlth head, vyhen Thorn begafi to forge . afaqad. He had a good lead when at one f stage:'of a head Stuart lay five and put in , a ‘‘bogle.” Thorn in, drawing ran wide but struck Stuart’s bowl, shot off on ,to the kitty, and killed tho head. .On the Dunedin Green the redoubtable Brackenridges, of Newtown, who are playing with Prince os a lead, suffered defeat in the first round at the hands of Tilburn, of'St. dair, by 16 to 12. In the second round however, they handsomely defeated , Dr . Harrison’s team,, 26 to 10. Parsons, of Ponsonby, won both his gomes, the'first being , against, Ardell, of TJataitai, and the second against Langley, of St. Clair. In the 'second round Easton (Momington) and Ardell found themselves so closely matched that an extra head -was necessary. At the , nineteenth Easton led 19-16, but Ardell scored a two and two singles -at tho-next three heada_and won 20 —19. In the same round on the same green Tilburn (St. Clair) ■ wrested victory from Bremner (Invercargill) with exactly the same scores. At the fourth head (they were equal, but at, the twelfth Tilburn led by 14 to 8. Bremner came again, however, and at the nineteenth head the score was 18 all. Tilburn added two vat the next, and in the last head of all Bremner could get only a single". Play for the most part was even and , uneventful on the Kaituna Green, and though there were a. number of close finishes, there wore no’ events of special interest to chronicle. Cooke (Otago) and Hutchison (Caledonian) were the only two to win both their games. On the Otago Green the outstanding plaA was that of Carswell, who was very effectively supported by a strong Taieri ridk. They followed instrufctions admirably, and . made every shot tell, with somewhat de- • pressing results for their opponents, who wore scarcely in the hunt at all. Coltman (Carlton), and Chegwin (Beckenham) played ■ a ’fine, steady game to a very close and interesting finish. At the last head Cheg- . win required two to tie, but? Coltman lay second, and did not play his last shot He won 18—17. n , There were no special features in- tho . earlier stages of the play at Roslyn, but Benzie and his team put in some really good examples of skilful. bowling. The green was not as heavy as might have been expected, but was not drawing evenly. , In die second- round there was an interest! 'ing game- between Robertson (St. Kilda) and. Payne (Kaituna). At the tenth head , Robertson;, hail a comfortable lead, the scqre -being 13 —7 in his favour, but at the end of the seventeenth head Payne had reduced bis lead, standing 16 to his 20. Robertson,’ failed to improve after this, and Payne wont ,up to 25?- In the last head Robertson lay game when Payne had his 1 last (shey.- -Ti)o latter drew the second shot. . but Robertson drove and burnt the head! The Kaikorai ' Green wds running nicely and*improved steadily as the day wore on’. In the first/round Harraway only managed to score,#, against Burson, who wiith his team played a''fine game. Hartaway is skipping onojof the rinks selected by the committee '.'of. the Dunedin Club, it being the club’s jubilee year. In the second round ho was' unlucky enough, to sustain another defeat though not a severe one. The contest be! tween Benefield and Hayward proved a ; very close one, Benefield winning on tho \ last head with three shots. . ThO|E‘l(linac©wen Green played practically ' just;as wpll as if no rain had fallen on Sunday, and (in'tho first round the contests re suitqd pretty evenly. The one outstanding exception was -where Broad, of Phcenix, A-beeti O'Hagafi, of Timaru; by more than, two ‘to one, Maddison also had a fatriy easy; win aver Spiller. There .were .several games between rinks . from- various city clubs on the Caledonian Green,' but none of them were productive ; -of much interest. There was an interesting ' game,- however, between a Caledonian rink, which-was skipped by Henaghan, and Dee's rink,..from'Maitai, the local bowlers winning ’ by 15, points to 16. Another close finish lay , between Hain (Invercargill, North End) and Herd; (Edgeware). The former won by, two V pointjj. In’ tho second round Watts (Otago) 19 al)cl Henaghan 17 kept close together thrqdghoht' their game. In the last head between Tonkin (North-East Valley) and - Dr Noble Adams, (Blenheim), the farmer was two up, but the latter converted the two to his side -with a very fine shot; couaiinig a tie. Tonkin gained two points in the play-off, The -Caversham Green was heavy, ana 4ho whole of the first round was dull, as the acoreS, which are, given -below/ indicate. Possibly?,this handicap had something- to do with 'the surprising result of the game be- • Thomson (Caversham) and Dr Sand- - star' ; ; (Christchurcb), who went down 19-8. The second round waa much tho same. Wilkinson (Roslyn) had to play to beat Dr .Sandston, which he did 18-14, and 1 Crane (Wellington)' 20 -was not far ahead of Dobbs . .(Sydenham)’ 15. v ITio first round games ait Mornington were all one-sided, and consequently lacked ■ There were better results in the second round, in which three of tho games were.-foughfc out all the way through. Seatoun il (skip, Wyatt) won from Waimate . (Laing), 19-16, and Wright’s rink from Bal- ■. maoesren, won by a point less against Lodlio (Anderson’s Bay). M'lntosh. (St. dair) 16 / had it close finish with Partridge (Linwood) ;’ 17. ■ Bentley, who, with Johnson, Hutchioon( and Neill, wn» chosen as an official rink ■ ; - -to represent the Dunedin dub in this its ifj’ijfiljfleq.ryear,* started well by winning .both .•/ games. In the first round he had an easy i', win over Partridge (Linwood), 28-9, and in s ‘ tho second round ho dismissed Baxnec, a / club, mate, 30-21. II y St.da'r Green wa-s ready for play at, 9 /- o'clock; I, (and 'was drawing weff when a start i./was' trade.' in the , afternoon. A local rink, / which was skipped by Steel, had an easy wih over Malcolm (Balmacewen}, 25-13, bid; I/
with tffis exception there? was a close finish to every game, and there was no more interesting play yesterday afternoon than Wile to be witnessed at St. Clair. M'Whannell (Hataitai) just beat Wylie (Newtown), 16-14. The second round produced two of the best games of the day. Lefovre had tho narrowest possible win over M'Whannoil, who was probably expected by most spectators to win. At the last head there was a tie, the soore being 14, and M'Whaniiell at his last shot lay two. Lefevre drove successfully and won by a point. Wylie also had a narrow win over Amtnmn, 19-17. The score was never much further apart than it was at the finish. Smellie had a walk-over Davies, 34-24. At a 'late stage of the game the prospect was even worse than that, but Davies went up two fours and* a three in l the last heads. -■ ■ Play will bo resumed at 9.15 this morning, and again at 2.15 in the afternoon, the intention being to play two games of 25 heads during the day. There will bo a meeting of delegates to the Bowling Association this evening, and to-morrow evening there will be a meeting of the council. A .smoke concert for the entertainment of the ‘visiting bowlers, for all competitors, and also for those assisting a-a umpires and recorders and in other ways, is being arranged for Thursday evening. It will Ire held in the Early Settlers’ Hall, and a good musical programme is being arranged. It may not bo out of place to mention that a careful study of a number of tlio cards handed in yesterday suggested many grave reflections on the efficiency of our education system. The card is very simple and tho directions on it complete, but it is a fact that very few of the experienced bowlers taking part in the tournament fill in ■ their cards both legibly and Instanaps were not unknown in which the duplicate cards duly signed by the opposing skips showed two different winners. Some do pot trouble to enter the last head. Many are not at all particular about recording the name «of (heir club. Few ore particular about the spelling of names, and many allow their writing to bo rubbed quite illegible. How, in spite of all this, the results are finally recorded with a largo degree of accuracy by officials and newspaper men is a secret known only to themselves, but a little .attention to these important details woulij certainly ease wonderfully the burdens of those who are running the tournament. ' The following are tho results:— . / RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. SECTION A. Dunedin Gheen. ~ First Bound.
