YOUNG BIRD SHOW. The ninth annual young bird show, held under the auspices of the Dunedin Cage Birds’ Club, was oommenoed in Fuller's Hall, Vogel street, yesterday, and will be continued again tq-day. To lovers qf bird and animal life the exhibition offers many attractions, as there is a very wide range of sections, comprising a high-class display of poultry, canaries, pigeons,- cats, and children’s pets, etc., the last-mentioned being present in considerable variety. The entries, which are well above any previously recorded, show that the club has the of fanciers and breeders, and there is every indication that its efforts to improve the standard of poultry and cage birds alike are meeting with support., \ln the poultry section the trend of modem breeding is snown by the remarkaly large entries which ' have been received in the utility classes, whereas the open classes are almost neglected. The entry of Whit© Leghorn pullets, some 60 in number, is believed to create a dominion record, and _it is undoubtedly a record . for Dunedin. Breeders are present not only from in, and around Dunedin, but from Koitangata, Milton, and Oamaru as well, and it is only to be expected that with such keen competition the general standard of the exhibits is very high, reflecting great credit on those who sent them forward. The pigeons, in which there is also good competition, also make a fine showing, but the canaries are not so numerous. In its setting out and general arrangement the show is one of the best which has ever been seen in Dunedin, and the officials of the club, deserve great credit for the success of their efforts in this direction. Both from the point of yiqw of the public and the judges, the staging is most > admirable, and even at night, tinder artificial light, the exhibits could be clearly seen. The judging, in most cases, was commenced early and got through in good time. The management of the show was earned out in a most 'capable maijner, a resuU that was largely due to the efforts of Mr W. Bsquilant (the president), and Mr W. V Sturmer, who, although officiating as secretary for the .first time, earned out his duties most capp-bly, and was uniformly 'courteous and helpful to all. There was a fair attendance during the afternoon, and it improved very mucJi at night. An art union for £SO worth of gold dust, along with the large entries, has already assured the success of the show from a financial point of view..
