ENTOMOLOGY.

THE BBJOUN COLLECTION. (Pie United Prrss Association.) WELLINGTON, May 21. With regard to the Broun collection, about which a controversy is now raging, the foots, as given from the official side, are that the director of the, Dominion Museum and other scientists have urged that its despatch to London would be a blow to entomologists, and the naming and classification of New Zealand beetles would be thrown into oonfuaion. as Major Broun had named m&jy, and comparison- with his collection was the only means of identifying them. It was also stated that entomologists all over New Zealand had sent specimens, and that public rnonev had been spent on the collection. The solicitors'expressed surprise, and claimed that Major Broun had returned many specimens. The money spent by the Government had brought them a good return, and the sole payment to the deceased had been a few free copies. _ Dr Thomson adds that the _ Dominion Muserum has capable entomologists on its gUff, and that the collection will receive his attention; but special a.ccommodation must be provided. A letter has been sent to the British Museum by the New Zealand Institute asking it to allow the collection to •stav in New Zealand for a period preferablv in Wellington. The Dominion Museum will give the services of an experienced entomologist wholly to it m New Zealand. The Government has exercised ita power to stop collections of tho kind <«™g the counter untfl sonw arrangement hm been madef but the British Museum is assured that there is no intention of prohibiting its ultimate export
