THE COST OF LIVING.

HIGHER PRICES PREDICTED,

Press Association— By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 17. The Labour Gazette states that retail prices, including food,, clothing, fuel, light, and rent, on May 1 were about 141 por cent, abovo the figures ruling in July, 1914.

The Food Controller's statistics relating to food show an increase of 146 per cent. He says that the United Kingdom's food prices have risen less than those of Prance, Italy, and Sweden, and axe not much in excess of those of the United States. He adds that the present level of prices is undoubtedly a matter for serious concern. The Food Controller concludes by stating that prices in the incoming rammer will reach a very high level, owing to the cost of importable food, the partial removal x>l the bread subsidy, and the increase in the price of sugar and potatoes. —A. and N.Z.
