A Wellington Press Association message states that the Success dredge letuin was 420z 13d\\t for 114- hours' work. The master of the Electric No. 1 dredge repents that, during last week the dredge worked 129 hours. It has been working in a mass of boulders overlying rich wash with clay bottom, and has been able to bottom only in places. Tho ground is deep and severe on the machinery. The accident to the bucket belt will cause two days' shortage in this week's return. The amount of gold won last week was 740z Bdwt, consisting of a mixed sample. The prospects on Saturday were fair. The master of the Electro No. 2 dredge reports that tho dredge Tiorked 40ft ahead. Good prospects were obtained in tho early part of the week, but on Tuesday a rise in the bottom cut out the wash. As the river was favourable for working the deep ground, tho dredge was moved down and staited on Thursday evening, August 17. It will take a day or two to open out this ground properly. It is stated !>n the Thames Star that the Saxon Gold Mining Company has obtained six months' piotection from the Minister of Mines. The company has spent over £30.000 for a return of a few hundred pounds, and owing to the stoppage of operations by tho Drainage Board was compelled to close down just as good etone was reached. The presence of gas and water in the mine rendered stoppage an imperative neccS)ity. For the period ended August 1, tho Waihi-P.teroa Gold Extraction Company tieated 12,000 tons of tailings for a return of £3550. Tho company has now treated 623,600 t-ons of tailings_ for returns totalling £183,761. The total dividends paid to date amount to £12,500.
