ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

HASTINGS, July 20.
Douglas Watt, a horse trainer, who was fowneriy a successful crosscountry rider, committed suicide- last night. Ho placed a double-ba-n-etled' gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger by .means of a necktie attached to his foot. A" note which was left on a table near the bed stated:—"lf anybody thinks or says I am a cur for doing this he is a, liar, because I have not had a drink, but will have one in a few minutes." Ho also left a. letter addressed to a man named Hitchcock. The deceased, who was unmarried, was about 36 years of age. His relatives reside here. WELLINGTON, Jury 20. A , woman named Jessie Ness, who was picked up in Buckle street on the 17th insk and taken to tJhe hospital, died there to-day. The cause of death is supposed to be kidney trouble. TTMARU, July 20. An inquest was held yesterday on the body of Ernest T. Hill, a cabinetmaker, aged 23 years, who died on Wednesday afternoon after what appeared to be a fit, in the forenoon. The medical evidence on the post mortem examination was indecisive, and the stomach was scaled for analysis. A small bottle was. found in one of the pockets, and an orordeso of ehlorodyne is euegested, having possibly been taken for a cold. At Levin on Tuesday (says the New Zealand Times) a Maori named Ariki Roaroa •was knocked down by a motor car, which was supposed to bo on its way to Wellington races. Roaroa died the following day. The driver Btopped his car and paid. the expenses of a doctor before proceeding on his journey. f ,' Particulars of an accident in the Arthur' 6 Pass tunnel ket week were obtained by a Christchurch Press reporter on Friday night. The accident occurred at the Otira end. On Tuesday afternoon. there was a slip caused by a heavy rain that had been falling, and on Tuesday night a further slip occurred, pinning two of the night shift np against the wall right tip to their necks. It took their mates two and a-half hours to extricate them from iheir unenviable posHion. Both men received injuries to the neck and back. They are at present in the Otira Hospital. The name of one is believed io be Heiman, but the pressman was unable to obtain any accurate information on this point.
