OBJECTION TO ALIENATION.
DEPUTATION TO SIR J. G. WARD,

STRATFORD, January 27. A deputation of country settlers waited on tho Prime Minister yesterday and asked ■•that the Government, i'ssue a proclamation prohibiting the alienation of some 60C0 acres of Native lands at Kai-iwi and Waitotara, at present- held in large areas by European lessees, 'who are endeavouring again to secure the holdings. Tho deputation urged that the Government should either purchase the land or take steps to havo it out up into small areas and leased on behalf of the Natives to email farmers. The area Ls first ckss land and suitable for Instances were quoted of farmers adjoining doing well. One occupied 52 acres, and made £315 in milk alone last year. Another, with 140 acres, made £502 in milk and £67 in the sale of cat~j and pigs. A third, with 90 acres, received £468 for milk alone from 53 cows. The milking was done by the settlers and their families.
Sir Joseph Ward expressed sympathy with the deputation. lie recognised that the land was suitable for small farmers, but doubted whether legislative power was available. He would make inquiries. ,
