(Received Feb. 25, at 0.37 a.m.) In the House of Commons a two-day' debate has begun on Earl Percy's aniendirent to the .-Uidrrss-in-P.cply deploring that no effectual efior's have be?n made to vf store (lie niitliorily of I lie law in Ireland end to protect the elementary rights of tho subjects.
Earl Percy contended that a comparatively narrow area re affected, and lio emphasised the appalling nature of the situation. He asked why the Estate Commissioners had not been instructed to refuse to purchase land where intimidation prevailed, and urged that the Coercion Act was necessary to protect witnesses.
Mr J-.i-n-c.il strenuously justified the administration, and a-iso the. prosecution for cattle-driving under an Edward 111 slaUila, which, he claimed, was excellent '•>!' the purpose. )Te declared that cattledriving was rapidly decreasing, but he deplored the boycott-im:. which was on-suppres.-ible by the Crimes Act. TTo would not oppose a measure deiling with firsa-rins. providing that it was made applicable to the wlw'e of the United Kingdom. The present facts did not warrant the enforcement of the Crimes Act.
