DRAUGHTS MATCH.
- TOWN v. COUNTP.Y. The annual Tpwn v. Country draughts ir.-atch took place last evening in the. Otago Club's rooms, Maclaggan street, and, despite the 'inclement weather, the gathering proved a ' most siv.'cessf ul function. Shortly' after 7 o'clock the. clubr/toms wcro will filled with players and spectators, and the work of pairing was concluded by S o'clock. Mr James Gardiner, .champion of New Zealand, was elected captain of the Country team and Mr E. Hillikcr ucted as pilot for the Town representatives, while Mr Jos. Abernethy officiated as irferes. Fifty players wero engaged in the match, and, although larger numbers have met in this annual contest, the teams were undoubtedly tho strongest that have been brought together for several'years. 33 20 ' .28 On the conclusion of play a plentiful supply of light refreshments took the place of 'the draughts boards, and a social hour was indulged an, Mr R. Caldow (president of the Otago Club) presiding. The Chairman, in a felicitous speech, oxpressed his pleasure at the success which had attended the meeting of. so many exponents of the game of draughts, and hoped country players wonld be encouraged by the splendid score they had. made. Short speeches wero also delivered by Messrs I'. Hilliker, Jas. Gardiner, A. Murdoch (Riversdale), S. Boreham, Jos. Abernethy, J. A. Boreham, and W. J. Marsh (Wyndharn).
Mr Jas. Gardiner was unanimously elected captain of the Country team for next year, and tho. following gentlemen wore appointed to conserve the interests of the Country team in their respective districts:—Messrs A. Murdoch (Riversdale), ,W. J. Marsh (Wyndham), M. Leith (Woodlands), W. Robertson (Palmerston), Duncan (Ranfurly), W. M'Kinna (Gore), J. Shore (Taieri), J. Paterson (Ngapara), T, Ramsay (Hyde), Ceo. Clarke (Moonlight). J. Christie (Inchcluiha),and D. Bower (Waiwcra).
The following resolution, moved by Mr J. Gardiner and seconded by Mr J. A. Boreham, was spoken'to by'several gentlemen, and unaiifmously passed: —" That this meeting of town and countiy draughts players hereby desires to place on record its boarty appreciation of the services which Mr Jos. Abernethy, as draughts editor of the Otaeo Daily Times and Witness, bis rendered to the game of draughts." After several matters of interest to the game of .draughts in Otago had been dealt with in an informal manner, a vote of thanks 4e' vile chairman concluded a most enjoyable evening.
