The Milton annual.sports gathering was held on Thursday,-when, there was a. fair attendance during tlie afternoon...The-weather was fine throughout'the day, though a south-westerly gale niadc.. matters., somewhat unpleasant, especially' for, the competitors in the cycle events, who had also adverse conditions to contend withi in tho track, the ground having been rolled .'by .'a-traction-engine, which naturally left'; ridges not .conducive to easy riding. There were fairly good-entries in the various events,' and ,the various officials were untiring iu their effort's function a success and to start the rnccs to time. The chief interest centred -in- the Mile Walk, the 350 Yards Handicap, the bicycle events, and the horse and pony jumping.,: The. display in the latter event, howovoiy.was very disappointing. The Milton Brass Band, .under Conductor King, was present, and enlivened the proceedings with a number of selections.' A very successful social was held in the evening in St. George's Hall, when over 50 couples were present. The music was supplied by Mr.H. M. Mar'ryatt (violin), Mr E. Marryatt (violin), and Mrs Marryat.t (piano); and -the. refreshments by Miss P. M'Williain. The dance'came to an abrupt conclusion at about 2.20 a.m., when ah • alarm of fire was raised, and in less time than it takes to tell hats, cloaks, and shoes were donned, and a general exodus commenced.
