TIMARU CALEDONIAN SPORTS

(Per United Prsrs Association - .) TIMARU, January 1. For' the first day of the Caledonian games the : weather yesterday was beautifully fine. Six thousand persons were present. Lord Ranfurly and"Lady Constance Knox were the guests of the directors at afternoon tea. The Minister of Works was also present. The sports were a great success. Beswarick won the half-mile cycle race, Arnst the mile, John Conneli the mile and a-hnlf antf. mile, and George Sutherland the two-mile. W. Martin was present, and did a. mile on his 10 h.p. motor cycle. The running events which were well contested, were won by local men. The. girls' drill display and gymnastics by the Haima Family was excellent. January 2. ' To-day the weather was, showery in the morning, but fine in the afternoon. The Caledonian games were concluded' before a large attendance. Martin (Australia) was beaten in the Invitation Scratch Race by R, .Conncll'hy two feet. The time for the mile,, was 2min 20 3-sscc. George Sutherland won the mile from scratch easily, in Zmin 6 4-ssec—a.New Zealand record. He also won the Two-mile Wheel Race in 4min 31 2-ssec. The sports as a whole were a' great success. Martin, on his 6 h.p. motor, did a mile in lmin 30sec and a mile and ahalf in 2min 33 2-ssec, and proved a- great attraction.
