OAMARU CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

—«•— ; —— .' (Froii Oop. Special CoRREsroKDEST.) L OAMARU, January 2. .The Oamaru Caledonian Society's thirtyfourth annual games was held on Thursday and Friday. The first day was fine, though threatening, and the second somewhat showery. The entries and acceptances were very, large, the competition consequently being exceedingly good. A record for the ground was put up by F. Ford in the, light hammer event,'which he threw 116 ft. The same competitor won the president's medal for tho best all-round athlete. ,;Some fine running was witnessed, . among, the best men being D. Smith, (from Queensland) and Barnes (New Plymouth). The handicapping for'the flat and cycling events had been excellently done, and', some fine finishes evontuate'd. The cycling was'marred by the frequent falls on the first day, due to the small track and insyfTioient banking, and also to the unskilful riding; in the part of competitors. The direotors will have to consider in the' near .future considerable improvements to the. track or a new ground. The accidents resulted very seriously to tho competitors, and several' were incapacitated from appearing on the second day. The attendance right through 'was smaller than 'last year, the first day showing a, falling off of about £50 at the gates. The .'success of "the competitions was due. to the: hard work put in-.by a number, of the .directors and by Mr Rule, the secretary. There was a pyrotechnic display on' Thursday evening, and a concert on Friday evening, and both were very largely attended. The following are the. results:— Quoiting Handicap.-R. Mackie (scr) I,'F.
