SOUTHLAND CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S SPORTS

'V ;■;■;■ : January 1. : ' The.-fifteenth.annual'sports'meeting of the Southland Caledonian Society,.*.hold. at.the Queen's Park t^day,' attracted an,attendance of about 6000, the" takings at Ihe;gafes amounting t0.£305. The weather .was,very threatening during tho morning; and several-showers fell; but the"afternoon was fine, and!all the events were'got off in good time; the 'last being disposed of abont's.3o. The bagpipe music throughout was.very:good, 'especially in. the pibrochs,.where tho judge had' some difficulty in coming to a decisioii,. "so.', uniformly good were':the various performances'. [.'. .'The young pipers were, according to' the.jijdges, as good as have ever competed in'Ncw.Zealand. John-' stori (Bluff) had no trouble in" securing first prize in both Btylcs or wrestling; and Andy Halstpn'won all the bicycle events—one mile, two miles,.and.five.miles'—without distressing himself. - The flat, races-wero>well contested, the" 440 Yards furnishing' a very' fine' finish between Broad, Mortoh, and Saunders; but in the Mile, Lawso'n^and"Carrol'(lo yards and 30 yards),never gained a, foot.-.on the;.field, rind gave up in the last lap. The dancing was well contested, It. Pophani'securing .first iifi reel dancing, .reel ;,o' .Tullbch, ,and ...seanntreus.
