DUNBAOK ENDOWMENT.

TO TDK EDITOR. ' ■' ■i ; Sir,—ln your issue of the 31st ult, somv one signing himself " Sheep Farmerhna made' tmgoneroua remarks m reference ,-to the Port Chalmers Borough Council reducing the rent of tho above. I should not ■ have taken any notice of his remarks were it' not that he states that I had told the valuer that I "would get a roduotion. no matter what his report might be." I give that an • emphatio denial. I said nothing of the kind. I had a minuto'a conversation with tho corporation's valuer at Palmerstop, when ho told me lie had estimated the value at Is per acre. I said Is was too much. He replied, "I could not well make it less seeing that I'Lavo property of my own near tho locality of the endowment which I bavo lease;! at that figure." If "Shoop Farmer" wishes to got further particulars, the town olork at Port Ch'jlmors will tell him' that ti previous tenant of the endowment Had his rent reduced by nearly half, and then ho could not make aliviug off the land,, but 'became bankrupt; also, that the Government valuer assessed tho land at 9d pov acre; also, that.tho settlers adjoining tho endowment gave their opinion of the Value in writing, stating it to be from 6d to'9d per acre; also, that the council acted in •strict conformity to tho act. The'council ' is to be commended for acting fairly and justly, with a full knowlodgo of all the faots before it. I hope "Sheep Farmer" is not one 'of that class who would encourage a system of Irish landlordism iu
