SMOKING ON THE RAILWAY PLATFORM.
TO THE EDITOR, f Sir,—Some few months ago the public wm informed that instructions had been issued to stationmnsters to enforce the bylaw against smoking on the railway platforms, but, so far as Dunedin is ooncorned, no difference is apparent. I am not aware of aiiy largo station in New Zealand where this very proper regulation is so ignored as it is here, for it is no uncommon sight to see a man press forward to the ticket window puffing great volumes of smoko into the fnoes of his neighbours. As for the condition of the platform, with a crowd on it, the smoking and spitting are simply disgusting. If the officials do not of their own motion perform their duty in this matter they need not be surprised if somo of the sufferers should call the attention of their departmental superiors to their toleration of this nuisance, for it is now just about up to the limit of forbearance. By an item of news in your to-day's issue I observe that efforts are made to suppress this practice in Christcliurch, and, if so, one naturally in-
