The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held yosterday at Milton, Mr W • Noble (chairman) presided, and the member, present werc-Crs W. Crane, H. M Driver I>" Haggart, J. M. Begg, W. Nel, lll8 , montl ! ! y r <>P°rt as follows:' Roads.—The wet weather has made many of the unmetalled roads soft' and muddy, and Works.—Tho works on hand have made fair progress grace my last report. The formation contract on the new road to John Grey's, Circle Hill is now completed, and' the fenctn« in. also nearly done. Owing. to the new fprma°lion being soft, the traffic will be kept on the 'i fP rin S to S've it time to consolidate. A start has been made with the formation contract near Foster's, Milburn, but the rest of tho work i 3 being held over until tho spring as it is feared that if the earthworks are carried out in wet weather the road will be made impassable for dray traffic.. The metalling on a portion of tho road through Waihola estate and gravelling near Berwick are . l i°. w fiwshed. A supply of maintenance •metal has been laid down on the roads'at Wait 'hi °; cntso!l i Glenore, Mount Stuart, ijovell s Flat, and Stirling. The surfacemen nave been ongaged in repairing the Hillend road with maintenance metal. The maintenance metal contracts at Lovell's Flat' and i Uydevalo punt road, nro now completed. The ' ford on Washpool Creek, Pukepito, has been ■ repaired, and the culvert at Bower's Creek lias been strengthened by placing a quantity of . large atones in front <o prevent the silt b'»inff scoured away. The footpath at Stirling leadmg up to the schoolhouse has been formed, and is being allowed to settle before being covered with metal. A portion of the river bank at uilroys .liaß supped in, and steps are being taken to protect it from further damage by putting down some short piles and filling up the spaces with facines. Several of the brides and culverts have been repaired, and a supply of timber is being collected to rcplank a. por- • tion of the Matau bridge. i The Inspector also reported that he had ■ waited on Mr George Moore, Pukepito, with ' reference to the widening of the road on the ' river bank opposite his property, lie had agreed to give all the land required for the road Deviation for the sum of £5, which offer bad been accepted. Tho receipts for the month amounted to J-195' 12s IS; and tile expenditure to £559 17b. ' the report was adopted without discussion, TIE KING'S ILLNESS. The Chairman read tho telegrams which had been received from tho Acting-Premier regarding the health of the Noble then , expressed the regret of the council at' the ill.liess ot his Majesty and their satisfaction that ne was making progress towards recovery. CORRESPONDENCE. The Department of Roads intimated that | several local bodies, had anticipated the ex- i ponditure of money voted by Parliament for ' roads and similar purposes by doing work i to the amount of the items, and had subsequently claimod a refund of the money so spent to the extent of the appropriation, but that in-; future claims for works done before an agree- ■ lucnt or some other authority had-been - entered into with the Hon. the Minister of Lands would not lis entertained.—Received. j The Secretary. to the Department of Agriculture notified that the following weeds had | been included in tho seeond schedule 'as ■ noxious weeds undor the act of "1900:— Hem- i lock (Conium maculatum), wild turnip (Bras- ! sica cainpestris), oxeyed daisy. (Chrysanthemum I lencanthemnm).—Received. j The Secretary to the Department of Agriculture wrote enclosing regulations made under } " The Slaughterhouses and Inspection Act, ! 1900," requiring applications for licenses to be j referred to the chief veterinarian for approval, ' —Tleceived. I J. and 11. Campbell (Milburn) wrote asking I the council to improve the grade on portions > of tho road leading to their property from Milburn station.—The inspector was instructed to report on the matter to next meeting. , The Clerk to the Bruce Licensing Committeo ! wroto stating that W. Anderson, of Glenore, had hud his license for tho Victoria Hotel exten<Ud for three months on payment-of the proportion ot the annual license fee—viz., .£2 10s.—Received. ' , The Sub-committee set up to report on the ! maintenance of the Hillend road between Balmoral and Crichton reported that they could ' not see their way to alter the wst arrangement—i,c,, that tho Balmoral Ridin« ■ should contribute three-fourths and tho'CriclUou Riding one-fourth towards the formation and ■ metalling of tho Hillend road. Tho Committee further recommended Cr Begg (o extend the present contract as long, as possible, so as to give tho Crichton Riding time to meet the. demands made on it under t.hc present contract for metalling the road.—Adopted. I Notice was given, in statutory form, of the ' intention of the council to levy the ordinary rates, for the year. On the motion of Cr Martin, it was.decided (o call the attention of the inspector of stock , to the gorsc growing on county roads. j
