WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho monthly meeting of the Wuitaiaiti County, Council was held at Waikouaiti yester(l»y; present—Mr A. Graham (chairman), Cra Soulcr, Orbell, Foote, Dulte, and Portcous. The Chairman reported that Mr E. G. Allen, having desired to see the reads in Ins electorate on which G overmnent voles had been lately expended-vis,, Waitati-Wakari, Warrington and Kilmog Hill roads,—and to And out what might be required in the way oi injure expenditure, lip.d examine:! the roads together with Cra Duke, Pcrtcous, and Foote, the chairman, and the inspector. The Inspector reported, in regard to the Cedar Creek road applied for by Messrs Williams and Hay, that the waicv tables required cleaning out and that several portions of the load were badly rutted, but Ifr Ilay would attend to the latter work i£ the council carried «nt tho former. Ho had inspected Stead'a road' in view of an application regarding slips from Mr M'Kinley, and had found the road blocked in three places, and to remove the debris would mean the removal of about. £G0 yards, at a ro-t of £10; Ijut if left tilj summer a road could be formed over the slips. During the month there had been several slips on the Lower Harbour road, two of which had blocked tho way for n few days. The settlers had rendered assistance in clearing the slip at Pulling Point, and t'lie road was now clear, but a considerable quantity of clay required to 1)3 removed.—lt was decided that tiie inspector should cam- out the work of clearing watertables on Cedar Creek road, Consideration or work on Stead's road was deferred, and in rpspcct to Lower Harbour read the council recolved to tender its thanks to Messrs Smith Pickering, Abernethy, and Hoath for assistanco.—The report was then adopted. Cr Orbell reported that he had, with the chairman, met the delegntas from tho NorthEast Valley Borough Council in respect to the Pine Hill road dispute, and after a lengthy discussion it was agreed regarding tho expenditure of £70 on road work on the boundary road by tho Borough Council that the county should pay to the borcngli tho sum of ±33 for works to be presently performed on the boum'laiy road, to bo paid JES now and the balance by six animal instalments, baaring interest at the rate of 5 per cent.; regarding' the annual upkeep. tho road, that the County Council pay one-half of the cost, provided thiit any. expenditure exceediuff £i in any one year should be

agreed upon by the inspector of works to tho borough and the county engineer, both having power to act-.—The report was recoived and agreed to, and the council tendered its thanks to its delegates. William Mackay and thrco other ratepayers wrote drawing the council's attention to the state ot the road between section 19, block J and the Cemetery road, in the Blucaltm'Hidiua! —It was decidcd that the inspector should. . visit the road and report 'to tho council. . ' ■ Tho Trustees o! the Bluesltiu Cemetery forwarded Mr D. Mill's resignation as a trustee, and recommended Mr ,T. Lar.r;. of Waituti, (o fill the vacancy.—Tho letl-ir was received and the appointment approved. I F. W Plaits and !!fi other ratepayers residents in Purakar.ui petitioned the council to form and metal the road round the bay from tho head—i.e., the bridge—as far as Drake's Point. Tiie petitioners pointed cut- that for 20 years nothing had been spent on the rone! Jj np and requested, if the council had no funds' that it should forward the petition to Mr G. Alien, M.H.R., with n view to obtaining Government assistance.—The council decidcd I to forward tho petition to Mr Allen. j The Receiver of Land Revenue ndvised the council that lie had paid in £03 10s 8d to the council's credit at Palmerston, being the j " thirds" and " fourths " accrued during the i period from December 30 to March 31.—Received. The Supervising Valuer forwarded the valuation rolls for the district.—Received. ; Dr W. H. Borrie gave notice to the council that a case of diphtheria existed at Carey's Bay. A letter was read from J. A. Pullar regarding. tho Harvey strGet water course, pointing out that nothing had yet been done to the work and urging immediate attention.—lt was decided to point' out that the inspector hod visited tho water course to meet tho petitioners in this respect, but they had not carried out their part of the agreement, and tho council did not see its way to move any further in the matter. The Chief Engineer of Roads wrote informing the council that tho department proposed granting £14 2s 9d for repairs to Warrington road.—The chairman was authorised to sign the agreement. a Eight ratepayers wrote petitioning the council to repair Chisholm road.—The inspector was instructed to report in the matter. Jair.es Yeoman, Mansford Town, wrote drawin;; attention to the danger his house was in owing to the council's neglect, tho water not being drained off by the water tables on the top road and overflowing, caused a, slip on the Port Chalmers Town Bolt, and thereby blocked tho entrance to his property. — The council decided to inform the writer that it dicclaimed any neglect in the' matter, and considered its arrangements in the locality were sufficient under ordinary circumstance.-. Tho council could not bo held responsible for damage done by the elements, and had instructed the inspector to report in the matter. \7. Love wrote requesting the clearing of a slip on the Middle District road and several other repairs.—The inspector was requested to • report. The inspector was instructed to attend to a request from L. G-. Fonwiek for repairs to a culvert. The Port Chalmers Borough Council wrote drawing attention to the danger persons travelling in Macandrcw road were in through the lamps there not being lit. Tho borough was willing to do something, but considered the county should assist and also repair tiie road.— Tile council.decided that the application could not be entertained. The inspector was instructed to csrrv outwork in respect to a footpath applied for by J. Peters, Mansford Town. ■It was resolved, on Cr Duke's motion, that the road around the Reclamation ground at Mansford Town should be fenced off and a path formed insido the fence. Tho Finance Committee recommended the payment 'of accounts, amounting to £27G 4s 6d. The following tenders were recommended for acceptance:—4oo yards metal, Heywood Point road, J, C. Mouat, at 5s 2d per yard, £10.1 Os ; 8d; 32 chains formation and culverts, Hey- | ward Point road, J. Jlarkness and Co., £36; ; 34 chains bush clearing, Heyward Point road, i D. Bond, .£]] 8s j 2-50 yards metal, John Collins. at 4s 8d ner yard. AH the contracts were in Biueskiu Riding.—The rcnort was adopted. The next meeting was fixed for July 25.
