THE POSITION OF COUNTRY TEACHERS.

(Pr.a United Prkss Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, July 1. Mr D. Buddo, chairman of the North .Canterbury Education Board, at a meeting this morning spoko strongly in support of giving country teachers greater opportunities to rise in their'profession. He moved— That in future to be .oligible for appointment as first assistant'master in a school with an avcrago of 350 and upwards or a? second assistant master in one of the city schools applicants must, have hat! previous experience as head teacher.". Mr Buddo said the board received many plaintive complaints in regard to tlie present condition of things. The country teachers wove hopeless of rising to 'higher positions as the head masters in the big schools.were selected from city teachers. Head toacliershins were not .plentiful it was true, but lip "thought that if any " gilt edged'' positions were to be given away country -teachers who had absolutely lost hope and were sick at heart through weary waiting 'should have the f-amo opportunity .as city teachers. The present system' of appointing head teachers was wrong, apart . from tho equity of the question, as a country teacher often ' had to attend ~ to six different Standards and Had a gpod groundwork of training; .while an assistant master in town had one standard. ' Members of the board generally supported tho motion, which was carried, and will come into force or. August 1. 1 '
