THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH.

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. ALBANY, August 10. (Received August 10, at 9.30 a.m.)

Mr Barton, in the course of an interview, said that he regarded E#rl Hopetoun's appointment as most fortunate, and every confidence could be placed in him, he having already proved his sagacity. Continuing, he said that he could not offer an opinion as to who would be entrusted with the formation of the first Federal Parliament, but he was perfectly certain that the Governor-general would be left unfettered, and that no attempt would be made in England to influence him in any shape or form.
