TEMPERANCE MEETING.
(Pek United PbesS Association.) HAWERA, August 9.
At a meeting' of temperance workers last evening the following, resolutions were carried:—"This meeting of sympathisers with temperance reform, believing that it is the intention of-the Government to introduce legislation abolishing local option and substituting colonial option, to be taken at periods, of six or nine years in place of three, as at present, hereby strongly protest against this attempt to deprive the people of their existing rights, and pledge themselves to resist by every lawful means the passing, of such a proposal into law." '• That this meeting view with deep regret and alarm the proposal to submit tne ques■tion of license or no license to the of the King Country as one that is unique and unprecedented, and fraught with the greatest danger to the moral and material well-being of the Native race. They therefore hope that no alteration will be made in the present prohibited area known as the King Country."
