AUCKLAND, July 28. Casimiro Monte, master of the'ltalian barque Guiseppe d'Abundo, was to-day convicted of knowingly acquiring possession of two and a-haif gallons of uncustomed gin ,° | allons Vermouth wine and fined £160 (reduced to £50), without costs, .fcrank Wilhams, a fishmonger, pleaded guilty to a similar charge concerning a quarter of a gallon of gin and two gallons 0.1 wine, and was fined three times the value of the goods—viz., £20, without costs. This is the sequel to a case in which; the sailors on the Guiseppe d'Abundo were recently fined three times the value '■ of some gin and rum found in their possession while ashore.

Forty more Austrians will arrive here on Monday, and 100 are on the way from Dalmatia, while 200 are expected next September. In reply to local protests, the Premier points out that the ■ emigration is against the wishes of the Austrian Government, and an evasion of the Kauri Gum Industry Act. If the Austrians attempt to come here decided action will be taken.
