There is little prospect, of the miners ao, cepting Sir W. J. Lyne's hewing rate compromise. There are indications that unless an immediate substantial advance is coa« ceded a general strike is probable.

STRIKE AT MOUNT LYELL.

HOBART, July 28. (Eeceived July 28, at 9.15 a.m.) The directors of the Mount Lyell Company have closed down for an indefinite period two out of their three furnaces. This reduction in the working plant is in consequence of the strike caused by their having dismissed an employee for insubordination. About 60 men are thrown out

of work.

AUCKLAND, July 28. lhe Trades and Labour Council enter a protest against the bill before the House which will entitle any competent person in any trade to demand admission to the trade union on payment of 5s entrance fee and 6d weekly. It i s stated that if the bill » carried the local unions would have to delete the benefit clauses, and that societies organised under English rules would hava to disband.

BREACHES OF AN AWARD. (Pbk United Pkess Association.)

WELLINGTON, July 28 In the Arbitration Court to-day J L Aimbell, charged by the Furniture Trade ' Union with two breaches of an awardviz., (1) paying less than the stipulated' wage, and (2) keeping over the proportion of apprentices—the Court found that, there had been a breach of the award, and fined Aimbell £2 and costs (£8 8s 6d). Kimbell said that he had not read the award, and tne Court commented on his laxity.
