NELSON, July 29. A shocking accident occurred on board the steamer Haupiri this morning just prior to her departure for Westport. ,Mrs Higgins, a steerage passcjhger, who was accompanied by her husband and young children, was sittinoon a grating aft with her legs underneath the grating. Before leaving tho wharf the officers tried the steering gear, when the quadrant at the rudder head jammed her leg. stripping .the flesh from the calf. With difficulty she was relieved, and was attended medically bhe was taken on in the steamer.
About a week ago a child named Catherine Mary Ludwig, an orphan living with her grandmother (Mrs Catherine Maddox) at Mansford Bay, Port Chalmers, was badly burned through her clothes catching fire She was removed to the hospital, but although everything possible was done for her, she died on Saturday. Mr Carew will hold an inquest on the body this morning
