FIRE BRIGADES.
A function to which always attaches a good deal of importance in fire brigade circles cams off at the European Hotel on Friday evening, when the Duncdin Railway Firs Brigade held their annual supper. The chair was occupied by Captain Wallace, who was supported by csCaptain Barclay (Railway Brigade), Captain Mitchell (City. Fire .brigade), Captain Washer (Koslyn Brigade), Captain Price (South Dunedin Brigade), and Foreman Hudson (Caversham Brigade), and Secretary Dyer (Port Chalmers Brigade) The usual loyal' and patriotic toasts having been honoured, the Chairman proposed " The Visiting Brigades," which was responded ■to by the representatives of the various brigades, present, Captain Mitchell taking advantage- of the 'occasion to r-ifer to the closs connection which existed betv/een the Railway Brigade and his own, several members of the former being regular.attenders with theCity Brigade upon all occasions of fires. The toast of the " The United Fire Brigades' Association " was -replied to by Captain Mitchell, who gave some interesting, information in reference to the growth of the association since he had assisted at its inauguration some 20 oud years ago. At the present time the U.F.ii.A. had a membership of 74 brigades and 1700 firemen, and was productive of very great good. The accident insurance fund was an excellent arrangement, and one which was being largely taken advantage of. fie hoped to shortly see suitable legislation for the maintenance of fire brigades passed by Parliament. " Tito Railway- Fire Brigade" v/a3 also honoured. During the evening an excellent programme of vocal and instrumental selections was gone through, Mr G-. West presiding at the piano. The catering,"^ which was carried out in Host Power's best style, g-ave general Fatisfacy'tion. —
