, Drunkenness.—One first offender was convicted and discharged, and another, who did not appear, was fined 20s, or 48 hours' in gaol. William M'G-regor was fined ss, or 48 hours' imprisonment, and Jeremiah Toomey 20s, or 48 hours' in gaol. Vagrancy.—Mary Basan was charged with bsing an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful means of support.—Mr Irwin, who appeared for accused, asked for an adjournment. It-was a peculiar case, because the husband was also charged with beni" a ro»ue and a vagabond. The mother of Mrs 'Basan was in court, and was anxious to take her daughter home and keep her there. She would then be some four miles away from her former haunts. If tho adjournment was not granted, counsel would, if the bench would convict and order accused to come up for sentence when called on, enter a pica of guilty.—Sub-inspector Kiely suggested that this course should bo pursued, and the suggestion was agreed to by the Bench. Conrad .Basaii was then charged with being an incorrigible rogue and vagabond, having no lawful visible means of support, and having been previously convicted as a rogue and a vagabond.—Mr Irwin. pleaded guilty on behalf of accused, who, he said, had been constantly employed up to the 23rd May. Ho had been married since the 4th February, 1830. Messrs A. nnd T. Burfc's, foreman was willing to take him bafck and employ him.—Sub-inspector Kiely stated that the police had had considerable trouble with the young man. Twelve months ago a. warrant had to be issued for hi 3 arrest. Since he had been married ho had made

This unfortunate little woman had been driven upon the streets by him. Their Worships could judge for themselves, from the record, as
to whether he was worthy of any clemency at their hands.—The record showed that accused had been previously convicted 14 times of theft, breach of the peace, house-breaking, and vagrancy.—ln reply to a question'by the Bench, the Sub-inspector said accused resisted when arrested. Ho'put himself into a fighting attitude, and the police had a chase after him into the domain, and when they caught him he tried to fight with Detective Cooney.—Accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
