ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAIKATO WAR.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sie,—ln the " Omnium Gatherum " column of to-day's issue it is stated that Captain Ring was killed on April 2, 1863. As a matter of fact, that was the very day the gallant captain sailed out of Portsmouth as captain of G Company, IBth Royal Irish, in the troopship Elizabeth Anne Bright, for Auckland. He was three times mentioned in despatches during the Waikato campaign, and was killed at the storming of Orakau. Captain Ring was the smartest officer in the battalion—a fact that the general was not slow to notice. Ho served in the Crimea, and was a native of Mallow, County Cork. —I am, etc., Balclutha, July 24. J. H.
