THE CAVERSHAM SEAT.—"A WARREN TO THE RESCUE! " TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —It has been openly averred that the candidature of Mr Warren for this seat, to be determined next Wednesday, is a matter that does not affeot the so-called "Conservative party." Doe 3it not? Honesty of purpose, intelliganco of mind, educated thought, conrags' of expression in a candidate, are qualities that should command the support of all parvisa, the respect of every class. Unfortunately^ their absence has been emphasised ia late New Zealand Parliaments. If Mr Warren comes forward as a working man's candidate, all the stronger is his appeal for support to the Conservatives. Are we not all workers, whether the daily-clothes are of the best tweed or of homespun?' Has hot all the social legislation of the present evoluted from the seed sown years ago by the Conservative gardeners of this, our beautiful estate, and are we today to sit supinely when we perceive a trustworthy and capable cultivator willing to enter into the garden and carry out our own handiwork, intelligently, honestly, truthfully? I trow not ■ Whatever our losses in the past— ■ and, with sorrow, I confess they have been many,—matters financially have reached tooserious a complexion to admit of treating a general election with contemptuous carelessness. The first note of financial depression that rings its dissonance throughout the world will startle the New Zealand .taxpayer from his Seddonian-drtigged dream of cooked surpluses. AVeliing.ton is not the exchange of the universe.. The breadwinners (not totalling three hundred thousand,'while those they have to support exceed four hundred thousand) will have an eye-opeuer as regards the prosperity of the colony. The next Parliament of New Zealand will possibly decide its fate for many a year. ■ During that time the world's wheel of present prosperity may turn round, and the lean years stare us in the face. Woe to us if then we are still swallowing the bastard Liberal ..narcotics. Misstatlcments,' speciously misleading accounts, will not then help the unfortunate breadwinner when the cycle of an universal depression'settles on the world, as settle it will ih the ordinary course of events. Conservatives of Caversham, I call upon you to cast aside apathy and .push for the polls on Wednesday nevt. Mr Warren " fills the bill" f6l-you as well as himself or his party. He is honest, he is capable—what more can1 you want ■in any representative? Up, then, with the Connservative Gonfalon. Let the traditions of the party urge'you to fulfil its best record—to fight, with all your capable energy for the true and the pur.c. Conservative women, the well-nurtured, the favoured of fortune, come forward in serried array and secure the victory, for on your endeavour rests the battle. Remember, it is rfor your-, selves and your children's future you are' fighting.—l am, ele., '.'.-.■' ■ ■'. • .. A Conservative. December 4. ■ : . • 1 ; -. :
