THE NO-LICENSE MEETING AT SOUTH DUNEDIN.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—Your correspondent, the Rev. ; T. G. Brooke, has only told you "part of the truth in reference to the above. . •■■'
Let me explain. La3t Monday Mr M'Donald, the agent for the hall, informed me that he heard that a no-license, meeting was to be held in the hall. Mr M'Donald stated that they had not so far" engaged the hall, and asked my consent to ■ charge £2. This I readily'gave. The Rev. Mr Brooke states that the hall was engaged for a no-license party: by Mr Wardrop. ,1 telephoned to Mr Wardrop, and he informed me that he bespoke the.hall for last Friday for 20s, but did not mention it was for a meeting for the nolicense party—hence the trouble.
I do npt know that one is bound to1 let his hall for- any sum;to persons whose purpose consists largely of running himself and his trade down, any more than the rev. gentleman would be bound to.let his church to a Mohammedan or anti-prohibitionist lecturer. —I am, etc., ■" "' ' '■' ' - ■'; •■■"..'
