BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

SOUTH DUNEDIN.

Tho usual fortnightly meeting of the South Duncdin Borough Council was held last evening. There were present—The Mayor (Mr Fiddiß), Ors Marlow, Cronin, M'Key, Osborno, Scott, Shacklock, Bottinp;. Holley, and M'Curdy.

Mr J. Baker .complained of neglcot on the part of tho nighlaoij contractor.—Attended to.

Mrs M. Swete wrote in reference to a nuisance existing on tho property adjoining her residence. She requested the council to have the matter remedied at once.—Referred to inspector of nujsancea with power to act.

The Department of Agriculture wrote stating it was contemplated to bring section 5 of "The Dairy Industry Act, 1893," into operation, so far as tho inspection of dairies and dairy cows was concerned. This meant that the powers at present held by tho local authorities as Local Boards of Health would bo transferred to the department, which would carry out a uniform and thorough system of inspection.—Consideration of this letter was deferred for a fortnight.

The Water Committee, in their report, recommended that the sub-in6pector should carry Mashers to repair any taps found leaking, tho same to bo charged for at Is each. Tho committee further recommended that boforo footpaths woro asphalted in futuro, the stopcock boxes that were low should be raised.—Adopted.

Tho Finance Committee recommended that municipal accounts amounting to £60 5s 3d and water supply accounts to £3 3s be passed for payment. Tho balances of the several accounts stood as follows:—Municipal accounts (debit) £1080 2s 3d, water supply account (credit) £85 10s 6d, sanitary accounts (credit) £84 0s lOd, interest account (dobit) £2193 5s 2d.—Adopted. .. \

The Works Committee, in their report, commended that a mud tank and syphon' bo placed in Cargill road, opposite the Caledonian grand stand; that tho footpath in M'Bride street, in front of Mr Smith's shop, be asphalted ; that the open ditch in Upper Richmond street be piped to the extent of 5 chains, and that threo loads of rotten rock be spread in Ca^hel street. The committee further recommended'that the inspector be empowered to spread a few loads of rotten rock on the south side of J.facandrew road, between Thomas street and Anderson's Bay ro.id, and on the east side of Adelaide street footpath. The committee made no recommendation in regard to tho asphalting of the footpath on Main road, in front of Mr Cormack's.—ln connection with the first clause it was resolved that the town clerk inform the Caversham Council that a precedent having been established of each counoil paying for its own mud tanks, this council see no reason why a change in this respect should be made. It was' further resolved that the question of placing rotten rock on Casliel street be deferred till next meeting. ' The other clauses were adopted. Cr Shaddock moved—"That the councillors for the various wards form an Allocation Committee, and report at next meeting as to work necessary to be done on the streets and footpaths in the borough; also as to tho erection of additional lamps."—Carried. Cr Osborne , moved—" That' the question of appointing a ranger be referred to the Finance. Committee to draft a schedule of duties, etc."—Carried.

Cr Bolting moved—"That the corporation plumbers be employed for three months to inspect and keep all the taps in the borough in repair,'finding all material for the same at a cost of £s."—Carried. ,

Cr Marlow moved—"That' Gisborne street be asphalted as far as Vogel street."—Carried.

NORTH-EAST VALLEY.

4* a meeting of the council held last evening the following resolution was agreed to: — "That in accordance witli the provisions of section 136 of 'The Municipal Corporations Act, 1896,! and of seotion 37 of 'The Rating Act, 1891-,' this council do now make.and lew a uniform general rate of Is in the £, equally on all rateable property within the Borough of North-East Valley for the year ending on the 31st day.of March, 1900; such rate to be payable in one sum on Tuesday, May IL. 1899; also that, pursuant to section 26 of 'The Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act, 1885,' and 'The Rating Act, 1894,' this council now make and levy a Hospital and Charitable Institution, rate of'2d in the £ on all the said rateable property, as appearing in the valuation roll for the time being in force in respect to the Borough of North-East Valley, the said rate to be for the year ending on March 31. 1900, and to be payable in'one sum on May 16, 1899; and that the annual roourring special rato of 6d in the £ be made as heretofore upon all the said rateable properties for the same term, and payable at the office of the town clerk; and that the mayor, tiio mover, and the seconder sign the rate books for the year, commencing April 1, 1899, and ending on March 31. 1900."
